Why Foundational Training is the Key to Every Singer’s Success?

As the founder of Sa – School of Singing, I’ve worked with countless aspiring vocalists over the years and if there’s one thing I emphasize above all, it’s this: every singer, no matter their goal or genre, needs strong foundational training.

But what exactly is foundational training and why is it so important?

In simple terms, foundational training means learning the basics that every great singer is built upon. This includes pitch control (sur), developing breath control, exploring basic raags and sargam and nurturing the voice through healthy technique and regular practice. I always remind my students that singing isn’t about shouting or hitting high notes. A good voice takes consistent effort and strong foundations.

That’s why I believe a powerful voice isn’t just gifted – it’s built. Whether you’re singing pop, film songs, soul, Sufi or anything in between.

In the beginning, we focus on helping you sing in tune and gain control of your voice. You don’t need to worry about rhythm or taal right away as you keep practicing, you’ll naturally start to feel the beat.

Many people believe classical training is only for a specific style of music, that’s a myth. In reality, foundational training benefits every genre because it sharpens your awareness of pitch, timing, tone and breath. Even today’s top playback and commercial singers usually have some level of classical or foundational background — it’s what gives them vocal control and versatility.

Lack of proper training often leads to issues like singing off-pitch, vocal strain or inconsistent tone. In contrast, singers with a solid foundation grow faster, sing longer and perform with greater clarity. Most importantly, they develop a relationship with their own voice — one that’s rooted in discipline, understanding and self-expression.

This is exactly why I built Sa – School of Singing. I wanted to create a space where anyone, no matter where they live, could access authentic, structured vocal training rooted in Eastern classical music. Through online lessons, personalized feedback and a supportive learning environment, students at Sa begin their journey with the right mindset and methods. We don’t believe in shortcuts, we believe in building voices that last a lifetime.

If you’re serious about singing, start with your foundation, strengthen your roots, understand your voice and train with intention. Your vocal journey begins with that one honest step and I’d be honored to guide you along the way.
